How Sleep Works and How to Improve it?

We all know the importance of a good night’s sleep. It helps you feel refreshed and rejuvenated, improves concentration and memory, and can even help with weight loss. But how does sleep work? And what happens to our bodies when we don’t get enough or too much of it? What are some ways to improve one’s sleep? Here’s a quick rundown of what happens when you finally drift into your dreamland.

How Does Sleep Work?

Sleep is a natural process that occurs in all mammals. It results from your body’s need for rest and recovery and helps restore your health when you sleep. The two main functions of sleep are:

  • Restoring energy levels
  • Repairing tissue damage caused by physical activity

During the initial stages of sleep, your brain waves begin to slow down, and you enter light sleep. You may still be able to hear noises from the outside world. As you move into a deeper sleep, your brain waves become slower, and you enter slow-wave sleep. It is when your body begins to repair itself– lower blood pressure and breathing, relaxed muscles, and tissue growth and repair.

The deepest stage of sleep is called REM sleep (rapid eye movement) when your brain is most active, and you experience dreams. REM sleep is vital for memory consolidation and emotional regulation. You would feel very disoriented if you wake up during deep sleep because your brain is processing all the information from the day and consolidating it into long-term memory.

What Happens When You Sleep?

During sleep, your body can rest and repair itself. The body slows down its metabolism and shuts off all non-essential functions. As a result, your heart rate and breathing slow down, and your body temperature decreases. This decrease in activity allows your body to conserve energy and use it to repair damaged cells. Sleep also helps to reduce inflammation throughout the body.

In addition, sleep provides the opportunity for mental and emotional rejuvenation. The slow brain waves allow you to process information efficiently. Sleep is also vital for regulating moods. The hormones that are released during sleep help to stabilize our moods and keep us feeling optimistic.

What Happens When You Don’t Get Enough Sleep?

If you don’t get enough sleep, you may be more likely to feel irritable and angry. You might also eat more or be more likely to get sick. In addition, people who don’t get enough sleep are at increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.

How to Improve Sleep Naturally?

We all know how important a good night’s sleep is for our overall health and well-being. But sometimes, getting the proper rest can be challenging, especially when dealing with stress or other health issues. Thankfully, there are some things we can do to improve our sleep naturally.

  • Ensure your sleeping environment is conducive to rest, e.g. keeping the bedroom dark, calm, and quiet.
  • Avoid using electronics in bed, as their blue light and EMFs can interfere with your body’s natural sleep rhythms.
  • Several herbal remedies, essential oils, and supplements can help improve sleep.
  • Ensure you get enough exercise during the day as it helps to regulate your body’s natural sleep cycles.

Sleep helps us recover from life's daily activities, such as work, school, or play. It also helps us feel more rested, energized, and focused during the day to carry out our daily tasks more efficiently. When we don’t get enough sleep over some time, it can cause feelings of fatigue later on, which can negatively impact our performance at work and even otherwise. Therefore, sleeping well is imperative to a healthy and happy life!
